Exploring Career Paths

Figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life can be hard from inside a classroom. That is why I love the Ferris State Public Relations Program. Two weeks ago we were able to go on an agency tour in Grand Rapids. We were able to see what an everyday work day is like in different public relations careers. We visited a museum and 20 Monroe a music venue. It was awesome to see the different types of careers in the same degree.

The Museum

My first place I went was the Grand Rapids Public Museum. It was so cool to walk around the museum and see all of the cool exhibits that they had. It was crazy to think that could be a possible job for me. What they did was manage social media, press releases, and try to find ways to promote the museum and bring in more traffic. I never imagined myself working in a museum until then.

Stopped for lunch

After we visited the museum we all stopped for lunch in downtown Grand Rapids and got to know each other better. Going on trips with our public relations group builds not only connections with PR professionals but we are able to build relationships with each other. As we are all going into the same thing it's important to build connections now and use them in the future.

20 Monroe

Our next stop was the music venue in Grand Rapids, 20 Monroe. A student who graduated in the Public Relations program a couple years ago was able to talk to us and show us around. She explained what she did on a day to day basis and it was quite different from the museum. They worked with all types of entertainers and large crowds of people. The manager was able to explain to us what she does in situations when someone is unhappy and how she handles it. With the new COVID restrictions, they require a negative test within the past three days or a COVID vaccine card to enter the venue. If someone shows up and wasn’t aware of this they offer a $40 rapid test. The manager explained that sometimes people drive hours for the show and don’t have $40 for a rapid test so occasionally she will buy their test for them. This was just one example she gave to us about how she handles situations and tries to make customers happy.

Final thoughts

Final Thoughts

Seeing the different possibilities for careers is really important when deciding which path you want to take. It was extremely beneficial for me to see the different options out there for me. That is what I love about PR is there is such a wide variety of careers all in the same degree.
