PRSSA! What's that?

I remember going to my first PRSSA meeting, I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I thought there were going to be a lot of people and nobody would talk to me but, that’s the opposite of what happened, instead everyone greeted me introducing themselves one by one. It was a group of talkative, friendly people. Getting involved helps you meet new people along with gaining real world experience. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out what’s the right organization for you. There are many different student organizations so let me tell you about mine. PRSSA is the public relations student organization on campus. We meet once a week, host fun events and even go on trips to PR agencies. Not only is the organization about learning public relations but it’s also about making connections with other students who are in the field.

Guest Speakers

We have many guest speakers who come to share their expertise with the students. We even have some students who graduated from the Ferris PR program come back to talk to us about what they’re up to now. Just last week, we had an up and coming famous TikTok star, Reggie Bell, come to our meeting to talk about what he does. Reggie has almost half a million followers on TikTok and he also is a motion capture actor for Madden, a very popular video game. They fly him out to Los Angeles where he wears a skintight bodysuit with sensors all over that record his movements. Reggie talked to the class about how he came up with his Tiktok content and how he got to where he is today. Reggie graduated not too long ago from Ferris and is now coming back to share tips with us.

Tours

We are also planning an agency tour to Grand Rapids! We will be visiting an art museum, hockey arena, Seyferth, and Meijer Gardens all in one day. We get to spend the day seeing what a real world PR agency looks like. Not only do we get to watch how things are run but we get to go and make connections with people we may have never met. It’s important to make connections in your field so this is a great experience to be part of.

Hosting events

Other days when we don’t have someone as cool as Reggie Bell or Grand Rapids, we do other things such as eat pizza and get to know each other. We host events like the PRBQ where we had hot dogs, chips, pop, and invited everyone in PRSSA to come and bring their friends. It’s a great way to make connections with students. We get to know other students in our field while learning real life skills.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a student group to join that does it all, join PRSSA! We get to know each other, go on trips and host fun events. If you want to meet new friends and learn about public relations this club is just for you.
