Finding my Passion

Finding out what you want to do for the rest of your life at eighteen years old can be more than stressful. I remember coming to college and having to choose a major, I couldn’t possibly decide. I ended up picking psychology. I took a psychology course in high school, and I loved it so surely, I would love the field, or so I thought. Psychology is a fantastic program if that’s what you’re passionate about but for me, it wasn’t. It was extremely frustrating trying to find something that I would be happy doing for the rest of my life. I ended up switching my major four more times before I found the right one for me but, it was so worth it.

Trying Something New

I heard about the Public Relations program when I was in my third year of college. I was going through recruitment to join a sorority when one of the girls told me she was in the public relations program. I was curious what that was, and she had only good things to say. I decided that it sounded interesting. My next semester I enrolled in the introduction PR class. On the first day I could tell this was going to be different than all the other majors I tried. We started class off by playing a name game. We all had to go around the room and say our name, but you had to remember everyone's name in the order that they went in. This was to learn everyone's name the first day of class. I could tell that the class was going to be full of hands-on activities. It was fun and personable. Professor Bishop was fun, interactive and inspirational. I knew right away; this was the program for me.

The joys of learning about something you love

There is something different about learning what you’re interested in. It makes the class enjoyable and interesting. We get to learn about real life PR, explore how it was handled, and decide how we would have handled it. In PREL 440 we have five different case studies throughout the semester. We are each assigned a case that happened in real life, and we research on how it was handled and how we as a PR representative would’ve handled that case. Then we get to share it with the class while learning about everyone else's case. Not only do we get to explore situations that we could be handling in the future, but we have a ton of guest speakers who work in the PR field come and talk to our class. We get to hear their experiences and ask any questions we may have about the field. It’s a great way to get ready for graduation.

final thoughts

Finding what you love can be hard, in my case it took years. But when you finally do it is so worth it. If you’re looking for a fun program with a ton of connections, PR might be the program for you. Not only do we do fun things in class, but we also have the PR student organization, PRSSA, where we meet once a week. It’s a great way to meet other students in the program and learn more about PR. We play games, eat pizza, and often have guest speakers. If you’re looking for a hands-on program filled with tons of real life scenarios PR might be the program for you!
