As a public relations major, the most common question you hear is “So, what exactly is public relations?” Now, answering that is tricky because public relations is almost anywhere and everywhere! Public speaking, lobbying, social media, and event planning are just a few of the different things you could do. The easy way to think of public relations is to think of clear communication, whether that communication is done over social media, effective channels with consumers, or even press events, it is all communication. In public relations, you are basically the conscious of the company, thinking of the best way to handle each situation and then clearing communicating it to your targeted publics. Just when you have finally found a major, they throw more options at you! So, let's dive in and look further into some of our options.

POLITICS

When people think of politics they often do not think of public relations, but public relations can be many types of communication to the public. Politics can be an extremely stressful job with very long hours. Kayleigh McEnany, President Trump’s press secretary, communicates to the public in many different ways by both writing and publicly speaking. In an interview on Fox Business, Kayleigh states that “it's exhausting” and sometimes requires many long hours. Kayleigh does have a husband and a young daughter, making $183,000 a year as one of the highest paid staffers of the White House. Working in politics, it is extremely important to be open and honest, as you can be in the spotlight quite often. A big problem in government public relations is the unsupportive media. As good of a job that Kayleigh does when public speaking, the people who do not support her, give her quite a bit of backlash. This is common with most politics and it’s important to consider before deciding to go that route. Whether a democrat or republican, most people have heard President Trump use some crazy language, that maybe most Presidents wouldn’t normally use. Kayleigh, as the national spokesperson for the Republican National Committee’s job is to answer questions that interviewers have in a way that makes President Trump look good. Politics is not all about public speaking, interviews, and press conferences even though those are big factors. Being a skilled writer is an extremely important asset as well. Before Kayleigh worked for president Trump she worked for CNN and wrote many articles. On October 5th, 2020 Kayleigh McEnany had tested positive for the coronavirus and she had to make a public statement explaining her situation. She shared on twitter the situation that she was in, that she had no symptoms, and that nobody else was in close contact with her. She didn’t hide anything, but explained open and honestly, and did not apologize unnecessarily. Kayleigh does a really good job with communicating to the public and she is a common person viewed in the public relations political field.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Crisis Management is another fun option in public relations that deals with the public when a company encounters a crisis. According to ziprecruiter the national average yearly salary for crisis management is $62,805. Crisis management is not always just dealing with a crisis afterwards, but sometimes it’s foreseeing a crisis in the future and going a different route to prevent it. Crisis management often works closely with risk management, which focuses on preventing risks before they happen. One case that public relations is known for handling extremely well, is the Pepsi crisis in 1993. In 1993, Pepsi dealt with a crisis of people calling in, reporting findings of syringes and other odd objects in cans of Diet Pepsi. Within days of the first syringe being reported there were reports pouring into Pepsi’s headquarters. First, Pepsi pulled together a team of twelve company executives who would be the crisis team for the situation. Within a week of forming the crisis team, their president at the time, Craig Weatherup was releasing videos and press releases explaining the mechanics of the machine and the impossibility of foreign objects being inserted before being opened. Pepsi also worked closely with the FDA to reassure their retailers, and while they did that, not one larger supermarket chain pulled Pepsi off their shelf. The company created an 800 number to take consumer calls and also faxed out daily updates on the crisis to its 600 offices. Soon, they began catching the people inserting their stuff into the Pepsi cans and it quickly became clear that it was a hoax. Before they had been able to prove it was a hoax, Pepsi did everything right from forming a crisis team to being open and honest to the public during the entire thing. If Pepsi had handled that differently they very well could have lost much more business, and that is what crisis management is all about.
