Navigating Campus as a First Time College Student

As I drove to campus as a transfer student for the first time, I was ready to move into my dorm. With my car packed full of stuff, all I could feel were the nerves. I was heading to college, two hours away from home for the first time ever. The long drive felt like it was flying by and soon I’d be unpacked and on my own. All I could think was “Can I do it?” “Can I live by myself and be a successful student?” “Would I miss my family too much?” “Would I make any friends?” As scary as everything seemed in the moment, the answer to all my questions was going to be a simple yes, I can do it. As I drove up to campus in the passenger seat, my eyes were glued to the huge Ferris State University entrance sign. It was beautiful I thought to myself, this is my school. I pulled up to Mcnerney Hall watching many other students unload their cars. As I entered the dorm, I felt excitement overwhelm me. Students were everywhere, moving items in and out with doors open on both sides of the hallway. I finally got to room 29 and this was it, my dorm room, this was going to be my home for the next year.

Getting Involved

Being a freshman on campus can be incredibly overwhelming. Everything is new and it can be hard to navigate your way around. Luckily, Ferris knows this and offers a ton of events to get students involved and together. My first event was Bingo in my dorm lobby. The dorm offered prizes which contained bags of food to take home for the winners. Students were everywhere, on the floor, sitting on the air hockey tables, the entire room was filled with other freshman, who all were looking for something to do. My biggest piece of advice to give to freshman is to get out there and get involved in events, even if it’s a silly bingo game. Going to events is one of the best ways to meet other students who can help you get through your time as a college student.

Being Successful

Being a successful student looks different to different students but sometimes it can be difficult in college. You have class, friends, work and more to balance. The biggest thing that helped me become a successful college student is finding what I love to do and majoring in that. Finding something that you enjoy doing and are passionate about can make the world of a difference. When I first came to Ferris I was a business major who didn’t love learning about the business world. I switched my major four times before I found what I was truly passionate about, public relations. Switching to public relations changed my entire outlook on my time at Ferris. I love what I am learning and it pushes you to be the best version of yourself. It can be scary changing your major but if it gets you to what you love, definitely go for it.

Final Thoughts

Coming to college for the first time can be very scary and nervewracking but as long as you take the right steps, it can be a great experience. Getting involved can sometimes be out of your comfort zone especially when you don’t know anyone else, but that’s the best time to get out there. The best advice I could give to a freshman would be to get involved and find what you love. College is the best place to experience all types of new ideas and find out what you are truly passionate in.
